Wine Country Retreat

Situated on a promontory with expansive valley views, the terraced, Mediterranean style residence is nestled among a cluster of oaks trees creating a series of shaded outdoor rooms. A simple palette of reclaimed terracotta, plaster, cedar and stonework blend the structures into the surrounding golden hills. The interior spaces are organized along a vaulted central gallery adjacent to a courtyard garden. A detached Guest House with garage below defines the arrival court.

Marin Residence

Conceived as a “contemporary farmhouse,” the residence situated within a grove of mature oak trees is reminiscent of the Victorian Farmhouse vernacular common to the rural setting of Marin. The plan consists of a series of rooms organized around an interior gallery. Extensive covered porches provide transition from the interior to the surrounding garden spaces.

Tuscan Estate

Sited to embrace the sweeping views of the surrounding ridge lines, the resulting floor plan promotes a tranquil flow from the interior spaces onto a series of outdoor terraces that can be used year round. The house was designed to have an informal, “rambling” character with generously proportioned spaces and extensive covered loggias. Terraced in the hillside, the residence includes a winemaking facility and barrel storage on the lower level. An extensive series of Mediterranean gardens, vineyard and olive groves compliment the residence.

Mid-century Modern Renovation

The 5,200 square foot ranch style house was originally designed by prominent Californian architect, William Wurster. To adapt the adobe and wood structure to the client’s young family, an existing breezeway was enclosed to create a series of spaces including a Kitchen, Family Room and Breakfast Area. The existing white walls and vaulted wood ceilings were complimented by a playful layering of terrazzo, steel, concrete, color and geometric patterns. In addition to the Main House renovation, the project included a new Barn, Pool House, pool and sports facility.

Sea Cliff Addition

Located in San Francisco’s unique coastal neighborhood, the addition was carved into the rock cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Combining expansive glass, steel, wood and plaster with minimal modern detailing, the central gym space offers dramatic view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands beyond. An infinity pool blurs the boundary of the ocean below. The project includes a full size gym, spa bathroom, kitchen, theater and pool.

Shingle Style Estate

Situated between an expansive grass meadow and an old growth redwood grove, the residence draws inspiration from its wooded rural setting. Designed to reflect the client’s East Coast heritage, the compound of structures also embrace the lifestyle of its California location. To accommodate family and friends, the shingle style home combines traditional detail with informal spaces. The project includes a Main Residence, Guest House, Pool, detached Garage and Barn structure as well as extensively landscaped grounds.

Pacific Heights Residence Exterior
Pacific Heights Residence

Capturing spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline and surrounding Bay Area region, the prominent early-century Pacific Heights residence required an extensive exterior restoration and complete remodel of the interiors. Traditional materials and period detailing compliment newly conceived floors plans which respond to the lifestyle of the owner’s large family. The five story residence features an indoor basket ball court, formal and informal living spaces, and numerous roof top terraces. Formal gardens complement the surrounding site.

Napa Farmhouse

Napa Farmhouse by Stephen Willrich Architecture

Inspired by the region’s agricultural heritage, the Main House of this Napa farmhouse is sited to frame the views of the surrounding vineyards and ridgelines beyond. In the tradition of the farm house vernacular, the board and batten structures are lined with a series of deep, shaded porches welcoming indoor-outdoor entertainment.

To create a setting for informal entertaining of family and friends, the floor plan was conceived as a series of flowing spaces with the kitchen as the central gathering room. A heated screen porch opens on to a bluestone terrace creating an inviting setting for informal dining. The Napa farmhouse compound of structures includes a Main Residence, Guest House, Barn, pool and tennis court. The site is divided into a series of connecting formal and informal gardens defined by low stone walls, fruit and olive trees and stunning valley oaks.
